Barataria Basin Monitoring Surveys

Water samples are collected along a 110 km transect spanning a range of coastal environments, beginning in the Gulf of Mexico and includes a portion of the Intracoastal Waterway, a mesotrophic and a hypereutrophic lake, and a cyprus swamp.

The following parameters are analyzed monthly:        *limited stations
  • Water Salinity, Temperature
  • Pigments (Chlorophyll a, Phaeophytina)
  • Suspended load (sediment and organic)
  • Carbon (TC, TIC, TOC)
  • Nutrients (Ammonium, Nitrate+Nitrite, Phoshate, Silicate)
  • Particulate Organic Carbon, Particulate Organic Nitrogen, δ13C, δ15N
  • Algal species composition/abundance*
  • Toxin analysis (HAB toxicity)*
  • Zooplankton composition/abundance*
  • Microbial composition/abundance (Vibrio)*
